From Achaban House, walking opportunities range from gentle coastal strolls for those just wanting to soak in the scenery, to the challenge of climbing mighty Ben More. Although the Ross of Mull has few waymarked paths, there are many good walks through breath-taking scenery, where rare wildlife is frequently spotted. Our proximity to Iona provides further wonderful walking choices. We have detailed information available on walking opportunities for our guests and are happy to provide advice from our own local walking experience.
From the door of Achaban House there are 3 excellent walks – click on the links below for detailed information on each walk:
Walks of a similar length in the north of Iona can be accessed by catching the ferry at Fionnphort.
Of the longer walks available, the two most outstanding are to Balfour’s Bay on Erraid and Traigh Ghael Beach, through the Tireragan Reserve. Detailed accounts of these walks can be found here:

Ben More is a wonderful walk with outstanding views from the top and the starting point is only 40 minutes by car from Achaban House. Read a report of a walk to Ben More on our blog
The variety of habitats found on Mull provides an abundance of wildlife. Red deer are frequently seen on the hills, while eagles soar overhead, otters frequent the many sea lochs and inlets and birdsong can be heard everywhere. Seals are easily seen basking on the skerries and from a good vantage point on land it is even possible to see dolphins and other cetaceans at sea. There is possibly no better place in Scotland with the opportunity to see wildlife while walking at any time of the year.
