Mull is an island, so to get here requires a ferry crossing. Caledonian MacBrayne operate three ferry crossings from mainland Scotland to Mull – Oban to Craignure (45 minutes), Lochaline to Fishnish (20 minutes) and Kilchoan to Tobermory (35 minutes). Ensure you book your ferry in good time if you are travelling to Mull by car as they get very busy. Foot passengers and cyclists can normally always be accommodated. If you are driving on Mull for the first time be aware of the rules for driving on single track roads. Always move to a left hand passing place or position yourself adjacent to a right hand passing place when a car approaches. Especially always allow faster vehicles behind you to overtake. Watch your speed as there are many unexpected obstacles on the roads from cyclists and walkers to animals such as cows, sheep, deer and otters. This useful link will tell you all you need to know> If you are driving from Craignure it will take around an hour to reach Achaban House, with stunning scenery all along the way! If you wish, you can stop off for a meal or to get provisions if you are going to arrive late, as food shops shut at 6pm and the local restaurant in Fionnphort gets very busy in the summer season so later arrivals may not manage to get a table.
If you are travelling to Achaban House by bus from Craignure, the service is the 96/496. If you are travelling by ferry from Oban to Craignure, the bus departs after the ferry arrives on certain journeys, so check the times to avoid a long wait in Craignure. Click here for the link to the 96/494 bus timetable. The bus journey from Craignure to Fionnphort takes just over an hour. As you board the bus, ask the driver to drop you at the gate outside Achaban House and make sure he has understood – Achaban House is 0.8 miles (1.3 km) before the bus reaches Fionnphort. If you catch the 5pm bus from Craignure, you might want to buy any food provisions you need in Oban as the food shop shuts at 6pm in Fionnphort.
