The wonderfully named Bay at the Back of the Ocean (Camas Cuil an t-Saimh) is a magnificent wide arc of sandy beach, fringed with wild flower machair, facing west, the perfect place to watch sunsets. Over the ocean the next dry land is Canada. Parts of the bay are piled high with attractive multi – coloured rounded pebbles – remember to take a rucksack, it is irresistible to choose a few. The left of the beach is perfect for rock pooling. Take care where you walk as some birds nest on the shoreline. On the far left of the Bay look out for the Spouting Cave in the distance on the cliffs. The best conditions are high winds and a big sea swell to force the waves through a fissure in the rock, creating spouts of up to 30 feet. To reach the Bay, from the ferry, turn left and follow the shore road which turns right up the hill. Go through the gate and cross over the golf course which is common grazing for sheep and cows.
