"Jottings" from our guest Philip

Sunday, 6 June 2021

Our guest Philip Chambers who stayed with us this May sent in some wonderfully evocative "jottings" reflecting his stay with us in words and pictures. They are a real treat to read and beautifully echo why we choose to live here and our guests love visiting

A recent walk to nearby Fidden beach resulted in a rare find for us!

Ardalanish Weavers

Saturday, 1 February 2020

Located on the hillside overlooking beautiful Ardalanish Beach is Ardalanish Organic Farm, with its herds of Highland cattle and native Hebridean sheep. But what you don’t expect to find on a farm is a high quality weaving mill

A Visit to Carsaig

Saturday, 15 June 2019

A trip to Carsaig is on the bucket list of most adventurous walkers visiting Mull, due to the attraction of the Carsaig Arches, which require a demanding, dramatic and rewarding trek to reach. However, it is very worthwhile to visit Carsaig Bay on its own; the grandeur of the bay contrasting with the towering volcanic cliffs surrounding the fertile glen.

Wild Swimming with Calum Maclean

Sunday, 31 March 2019

With keen wild swimmers amongst us, we were delighted to host wild swimmer Calum MacLean and his team at Achaban House this week.  Calum is star of the fantastic BBC Alba adventure programme Dhan Uisge (Into the Water) and he was in Fionnphort to film part of the new series.

Stay awhile in the Ross of Mull and Iona

Sunday, 30 September 2018

Quite rightly, many people are attracted to visit the tiny unique Iona which is found off the tip of the Ross of Mull.  The area is fairly remote, and the journey passes through very beautiful scenery, so why not plan at least a 3-day stay or more and enjoy exploring this special corner of the Hebrides.

Autumn short breaks Ross of Mull and Iona

Sunday, 23 September 2018

October is a wonderful month for a short break in the Ross of Mull and a stay at Achaban House. Here are 10 good reasons why!

A visit to Scoor Beach and Cave

Thursday, 30 August 2018

To reach the coastline of Scoor involves a short walk across unmarked moorland.  The reward is a stunning beach, a prehistoric cave and a landscape of rock formations straight out of science fiction.

Recommended detour: Lochbuie

Saturday, 18 August 2018

When planning your visit to Achaban House, and if coming via Craignure, it might be worth thinking about setting out early to take a detour as there are so many iconic places to visit along the way. One of our favourites is Lochbuie, one of the most beautiful locations on Mull; a sweeping bay fringed with mountains; a 15th century castle; a stone circle in a magical setting, a mediaeval chapel and the quirky “old post office” for old-style shopping and refreshments with an honesty box.

Exploring the coast of Ardtun

Tuesday, 31 July 2018

A walk along the coast at Ardtun, near Bunessan, is suited to those with a more adventurous outlook as the going can be very rough in places. But it is a fascinating part of the Ross of Mull and worth the effort if you take care, so we set off on a fine afternoon last week to explore the coast and try a bit of fishing. The waters of Loch Scridain were a beautiful blue green and crystal clear, perfect for snorkelling and the views across Loch Scridain to Burg and the Ardmeanach Peninsula are breathtaking.

Puffin trips from Fionnphort

Monday, 2 July 2018

One of the main attractions for our guests is the opportunity to see puffins on a cruise to Staffa or the Treshnish Isles. Puffins have great appeal because of their small size and comical walk as well as their distinctive rainbow coloured bill, white cheeks and clown-like black stripe down over each eye. One of the delights of puffins on Staffa and the Treshnish Isles is that they are so unafraid of humans – and in some cases downright friendly!

Whooper Swans on Loch Pottie

Wednesday, 4 April 2018

Despite the recent wintery weather, there is a definite sense of spring in the air, and we are enjoying the longer days and looking forward to the increase in temperature which is forecast for next week – it is April after all! But there are a few things we will miss with the passing of winter.  A major pleasure of winter on Mull is the passage of migrant birds and in particular for us, the whooper swans that stop over on Loch Pottie for several weeks each way.

A stunning winter walk to Erraid

Wednesday, 13 December 2017

While the rest of the UK was snow and ice-bound last week, our guests took advantage of a clear sunny day to explore the tidal island of Erraid, and walk to Balfours Bay (Traigh Gheal) , surely one of the most beautiful coastlines in the UK. Balfours Bay is named after the fictitious character David Balfour in Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel “Kidnapped”, who is washed ashore there in the story.

The sights and sounds of autumn

Monday, 16 October 2017

There are changes here in the natural environment, heralding the arrival of the new season and for us it simply adds to the delight of living in this wonderful part of Mull. Some bird species are leaving and others arriving as they migrate to and from winter grounds. We miss the flocks of swallows and sand martins which loved hunting for insects, swooping at great speed around our woodland edge but are pleased to see the return of whooper swans and tufted duck to the loch

Loch Pottie Trout

Thursday, 6 July 2017

Now that we are in the trout fishing season, Loch Pottie, at the bottom of the garden, beckons.  On any still, warm evening the sight of the surface of the water literally boiling with trout rises is too much to resist
